The New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project in Washington, D.C., honors the legacy of a prominent abolitionist leader while addressing the critical need to replace the aging infrastructure. The existing 70-year-old bridge, which has been classified as functionally obsolete due to its deteriorating condition and outdated design, is being replaced with a modern structure that will not only improve transportation efficiency but also contribute to the revitalization of the surrounding area.
The project includes the construction of a new bridge across the Anacostia River, featuring pedestrian overlooks, piers, and signature arches that enhance the aesthetic appeal of the structure. Additionally, the project involves the reconstruction of the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange to improve traffic flow and safety.
The new bridge will provide safer passage for vehicles and pedestrians, expand multimodal transportation options, enhance connectivity for local communities, and promote economic growth on both sides of the river. This transformative effort is part of the broader Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) Program, which aims to redevelop the Anacostia River’s waterfront from the Tidal Basin to the city’s northeast border with Maryland into a vibrant, world-class destination.
