The I-64 Gap Segment C Widening Design-Build Project focuses on adding one general-purpose lane in each direction along I-64 eastbound and westbound from the New Kent/James City County line to approximately 1.15 miles west of Route 199 (exit 234). This project is the second of three segments aimed at widening I-64 from mile marker 204.9 in New Kent County to mile marker 233.3 in James City County, addressing the notorious “gap” where congestion consistently disrupts one of Virginia’s most vital transportation corridors. The widening will occur within the existing median and right-of-way, ensuring minimal environmental impact. Major work includes 9 miles of roadway widening and pavement rehabilitation, widening and rehabilitating the I-64 bridges over Six Mount Zion Road (eastbound and westbound), paving the Lightfoot Park and Ride lot, installing overhead signage and ITS systems, constructing sound barrier and retaining walls, and improving storm drainage systems with box culverts and pipes. This project, along with ongoing investments such as the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion and the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network, reflects Virginia’s commitment to enhancing connectivity, promoting economic growth, and ensuring equitable opportunities for all.
