I-64 gap segment b widening

Overview

The I-64 Gap Segment B Widening Project is one of three segments in a major effort to widen I-64 from four to six lanes and relieve congestion in "the gap" — the section between New Kent and James City County where the interstate narrows and traffic frequently backs up along one of Virginia's most vital corridors between Richmond and Hampton Roads.

Segment B encompasses approximately 8.7 miles of roadway widening and pavement rehabilitation, along with the widening and rehabilitation of six bridges, box culvert and pipe repairs, construction of retaining walls, and the installation of overhead signage and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). By adding capacity and modernizing the corridor's infrastructure, the project is designed to improve traffic flow, safety, and long-term reliability for the tens of thousands of drivers who use this stretch of I-64 each day.

Dulles Engineering provides construction quality control services on the project, including field and environmental inspections, erosion and sediment control, materials testing, and structural integrity testing. Our team conducts field testing of concrete, asphalt, and soils to verify compliance with VDOT specifications and maintains detailed QC documentation to support project compliance and timely delivery. Through this work, Dulles Engineering helps ensure that Segment B is built to the quality and durability standards required for a high-volume interstate corridor.
