The I-64 Gap Segment A Widening Design-Build Project is currently in progress, focusing on adding one general-purpose lane in each direction on I-64 eastbound and westbound between mile markers 204.9 (west of the Bottoms Bridge exit) and 215.6 (east of the New Kent Courthouse/Providence Forge exit). This project is the first of three segments aimed at widening I-64 from four to six lanes, addressing a critical bottleneck known as “the gap,” where congestion frequently disrupts one of Virginia’s most vital transportation corridors. Major work includes widening and rehabilitating the I-64 bridges over Route 155 (North Courthouse Road), 10.7 miles of roadway widening and pavement rehabilitation, installation of overhead signage and ITS systems, construction of sound barrier and retaining walls, and improvements to box culverts and storm drainage systems. Delivered through a design-build approach, the project maintains work within the existing median and right-of-way, ensuring efficient delivery. Scheduled for completion by Summer 2027, this project will enhance connectivity between Richmond and Hampton Roads, reduce congestion, promote economic growth, and improve regional mobility. Along with ongoing efforts such as the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel Expansion and the Hampton Roads Express Lanes network, Virginia remains committed to strengthening infrastructure and ensuring equitable opportunities for all.
