New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge and Suitland Parkway

The New Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge Project in Washington, D.C., honors the legacy of a prominent abolitionist leader while addressing the critical need to replace aging infrastructure. The existing 70-year-old bridge, classified as functionally obsolete due to its age and outdated design, was replaced with a modern structure that improved transportation efficiency and contributed to the revitalization of the surrounding area.

The project included the construction of a new bridge across the Anacostia River, featuring pedestrian overlooks, piers, and signature arches that enhance the structure's aesthetic appeal, along with the reconstruction of the Suitland Parkway/I-295 interchange to improve traffic flow and safety.

The completed bridge provides safer passage for vehicles and pedestrians, expanded multimodal transportation options, enhanced connectivity for local communities, and promoted economic growth on both sides of the river. Dulles Engineering supported the project through quality control management, materials testing and inspections, and environmental testing services, ensuring the safety and durability of construction near the sensitive Anacostia River corridor. This effort is part of the broader Anacostia Waterfront Initiative (AWI) Program, which aims to redevelop the Anacostia River's waterfront from the Tidal Basin to the city's northeast border with Maryland into a vibrant, world-class destination..
