Fairfax county parkway (ROUTE 286) south widening

Overview

The Fairfax County Parkway South Widening Project widens approximately two miles of Route 286 from four lanes to six between Route 123 (Ox Road) and Nomes Court/Ladues End Lane in the Burke and Fairfax Station area — one of Fairfax County's most heavily traveled corridors. On average, 83,000 vehicles use this stretch of the Fairfax County Parkway each day, and the additional capacity is designed to relieve congestion and improve safety along the parkway. The project is one of three coordinated efforts that will ultimately create six continuous through lanes along the corridor from Route 123 to Rugby Road.

Beyond the added travel lanes, the project delivers a range of roadway and multimodal improvements. These include installing concrete median barriers along tight curves and raised grass medians elsewhere, constructing a missing shared-use path segment between Route 123 and Burke Centre Parkway, intersection improvements at Burke Centre Parkway including a new free-flow right-turn lane, a grade-separated bicyclist and pedestrian crossing just north of Burke Centre Parkway, improvements to the Route 123 interchange, and sound wall enhancements. Delivered as a design-build project, the work is carried out while maintaining traffic along this critical corridor.

Dulles Engineering provides construction quality control services on the project, including field and environmental inspections and materials testing of concrete, asphalt, and soils to verify compliance with VDOT specifications. Through accurate, timely QC reporting and documentation, Dulles Engineering supports the safe, high-quality delivery of these corridor improvements.
