The Dulles International Airport Access Highway Pavement Rehabilitation Project, managed by the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), rehabilitated the primary highway serving Washington Dulles International Airport to improve its structural integrity and long-term durability. As one of the main gateways to the airport, the corridor carries heavy daily traffic, making a durable, well-maintained pavement essential to the region's transportation network.
The work was carried out through Full Depth Reclamation (FDR), milling, and resurfacing operations, with construction phased from the interior lanes outward to the shoulders to maintain positive drainage and minimize disruptions to airport traffic. Major tasks included installing portable changeable message signs (PCMS) to keep the traveling public informed, deploying temporary traffic control devices for lane closures and speed adjustments, and applying localized erosion and sediment control to protect disturbed areas.
Dulles Engineering supported the project through quality control management and inspection, materials testing, erosion and sediment control inspection, QC laboratory services, and Job Mix Formula (JMF) preparation for the FDR work. The completed rehabilitation delivered a safer, smoother driving experience for travelers accessing the airport while extending the service life of a critical access route.
